​​​​​​​TE REO INIHUA – THE LANGUAGE OF INSURANCE

As part of our work to reflect the diverse communities that the New Zealand insurance sector serves, ICNZ is committed to incorporating greater use of New Zealand’s official languages – including te reo Māori.

In addition to the translation of our Fair Insurance Code into te reo Māori in April 2020, in June 2021 ICNZ also launched its official te reo name – Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa.

“We’re privileged to have our own national language and we want to make sure we reflect the country and people we represent. This year we are focusing on our use of Te Reo Māori, and the first step has been translating our name,” says Tim Grafton, CE Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa.

Since June ICNZ has strived to make much greater use of te reo across its communications.

So, for this year’s Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, 13-19 Mahuru, (Māori Language Week, 13-19 September) we are sharing some of our most commonly used insurance terms in te reo Māori. You will see these used more by ICNZ across its communications on icnz.org.nz and its social channels.

NB: ICNZ acknowledges that there are many different iterations of words in te reo, and that these may reflect only one of the possible translations and interpretations.
