ADVISORY: YOUR CAR INSURANCE AND WOF DURING COVID-19 ALERT LEVEL 4

The Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) has issued advice for car owners whose WOF may fall due during New Zealand’s Alert Level 4 period which started at 11:59pm on 25 March 2020.

Tim Grafton, CE ICNZ, assures car owners that insurance will still be in place.

“If your WOF is due while we are in Alert Level 4 don’t worry – your car insurance will still be in place as long as there isn’t an existing safety issue that would mean you might not get a WOF – such as tyres needing to be replaced.

“Also, if you have an accident while using your car for an essential reason during this time, you’ll also be covered as long as the cause of the accident isn’t related to a reason why your car might fail a WOF.

Mr Grafton cautions owners who are aware of a defect. “If you know of something that needs to be repaired it’s important not to drive it until you can get these completed, which could be tricky now. If you need to try to get this done during Alert Level 4 you can find a information on essential services on covid19.govt.nz.

ICNZ strongly recommends anyone with a WOF expiring during the lockdown period to get their vehicle warranted as soon as practically possible once the lockdown ends.

“Make sure your check your motor vehicle policy to understand our standard terms and conditions if our need to make a claim – and call your insurer if you have any questions.”
